It’s rare that anything survives my desk for any length of time. I’m known for swiping my collage saves pile into the recycling bin without sifting through first so I can start again. This little chap first surfaced in a Sainsbury’s magazine back in the summer. I though he was cute and I put him to one side. Every now and then he’ll turn up again and I’ll put him to one side. The other day I was working in my journal, moved a pot of gesso and there has was. Persistence like that should be rewarded, so he now has a place on my Jan 9th page.

The writing was an accident but I like it. I wanted to try a new 2B charcoal pencil to see if it smudged on my watercolour paper. Turns out, Cold pressed NOT paper (which has a heavy grain) plus charcoal pencil equals the pencil gets stuck in the grooves and makes your handwriting all Sabrina Ward-Harrison-esque. Who knew?
