I’ve never been a fan of boxing, but Muhammad Ali is an inspiration in self and social betterment for me, so I tried my hand at a freehand portrait of him from a photograph.
I worked quickly using ochre, dark brown, dark grey and black Neocolour IIs, white acrylic and a black ballpoint pen. I was quickly pleased how well it came out as far as being a facial likeness; it’s obvious who it is at least. I should have paid more attention to proportion if body -vs- head, especially considering an athletes body is usually disproportionate to a ‘normal’ body.
It was a fun exercise though and I think I’ll repeat it at some point. I actually find it harder to draw directly from a reference than ‘from my head’ and could use the practice.
