Art Journal Page: Muhammad Ali

I’ve never been a fan of boxing, but Muhammad Ali is an inspiration in self and social betterment for me, so I tried my hand at a freehand portrait of him from a photograph.

I worked quickly using ochre, dark brown, dark grey and black Neocolour IIs, white acrylic and a black ballpoint pen. I was quickly pleased how well it came out as far as being a facial likeness; it’s obvious who it is at least. I should have paid more attention to proportion if body -vs- head, especially considering an athletes body is usually disproportionate to a ‘normal’ body.

It was a fun exercise though and I think I’ll repeat it at some point. I actually find it harder to draw directly from a reference than ‘from my head’ and could use the practice.

Art Journal Page: My Word for 2012

20120117-212846.jpgl

Playing around here with art inspirations from @Gulfsprite’s ‘Art Geeks’ group using cut outs and art collage.

I don’t do New Year’s Resolutions, but one of the things I decided back in November was that I wanted to spend some time working more loosely, getting back into free-handing faces a lot more in my art journals, rather than the tight, illustrative style I do commercially.

So I’ve decided that my word for 2012 is ‘FUN’. I want to bring back some balance and spend as much time learning, growing and experimenting, as I do teaching and creating for others.

Making art ‘just for the fun of it’ becomes a luxury when you earn your living from what you make. But it’s an essential part of the job, just as a morning warm up and jog is necessary for an athlete.

So having spent 3 years entirely focused on getting the business side up and running, I now need to put aside an hour or so every day to get back to just playing and experimenting; because that’s how I learn and grow as an artist, and if I don’t learn and grow, neither will my art or my students.

This is an art journal page I did over the weekend for a challenge for Creatives group on Facebook.

As it happens it contains spoilers for both my next classes… One on lettering (Due mid February) and one on drawing male faces (date to be announced).

Anyone recognize the quote? No one on Facebook has got it yet…

Here’s the page and video from Wednesday’s UStream class and some close ups of the finished background. I was using gesso and texture paste to create various textures using found objects, then using paint and glazing effects in red, black and white to add colour dimension, and white oil pastel to pick out the highlights.
