On the left I wrote about my own experiences being ‘an individual’ hence no date. The pages before and after have one, so I figure knowing it’s a ‘March 2011′ page is enough.

One of the reasons I have ‘big gaps’ date wise in my journal is because I don’t always work chronologically and I rarely subscribe to the ‘page a day’ ethos. I find it puts unnecessary pressure on my brain to have something ‘important’ to say every day and if i miss too many days in a row I get really bent out of shape about it and try to ‘catch up’; which just makes things worse, frankly.

The way I journal is like this:

DO SOMETHING every day. It doesn’t matter what.

That gives me free reign to sit and paste things in, doodle on different pages, write, embellish or whatever, in any order, any way I want. It also means I have lots of ‘pages in progress’ at any one time. I’ve even been known to go back a few weeks and add more to a page I thought needed it. I treat the whole book as one single piece, not each layout as a separate entity.

The only thing I do do is add dates to pages that have specific events or ‘daily journaling’ on them. But even those aren’t necessarily in order in my journal because I might want to write on a page that’s a few ahead of where I last was.

Right now I have about 5 or 6 because I recently had an evening where I went through and added loads of collage bits I’ve been keeping. The page above was in progress last week and is now finished. I’ll put that one up soon.

This is how my pages start out:

Journal Page in Progress © Klair Scattergood 2011

That’s it; just two pieces I cut out of a magazine that I liked. No theme, no ‘must match’ restrictions or anything like that. I just felt both images were very calming and wanted to put them together.

Here’s another:

Journal Page in Progress © Klair Scattergood 2011

This time I’ve done a bit more… I added some edging with a nice sepia ink pad and the pictures do have a theme, being all Moroccan style interiors. I was having a day where I was fed up with the gloomy British weather and needed some sunshine.

Here’s another with the bare minimum:

Journal Page in Progress © Klair Scattergood 2011

If you look on the right hand page you’ll see I’ve scribbled a quote in in pencil, which I liked and want to make use of with the image. I will reserve that for one of my ‘out and about’ journaling days and do the lettering. The quote is there, it can wait until I want to play with it. Again, the images on this page have nothing in common except they are black & white. Considering the quote, I have an idea for the writing that will tie the two together. I may use this page to just write about something particular rather than a ‘today I did x’. That means it may not get finished for a week or so and will not have a date. Entries where I write about specific events or ‘that day’ have dates.

This is a more ‘full’ page:

Journal Page in Progress © Klair Scattergood

But if you look at it, it really is only a few extra images. This page might end up all images and nothing else. I have no idea.

In fact, I rarely have a ‘plan’ for my pages. Some do, like the Moroccan themed one and the B&W one with the quote, but most are just ‘stuff’ stuck to the page and added to.

I’ll let you see these pages as I near different stages of completion with them.

The girls are ballet and music majors and this on has a really great, chunky journal. Too bad you really only get to see inside it in the last 10 minutes of the episode.

This is the first shot. She actually has piano music pasted into it and is playing from it. But you never get a good, clear shot of it.

Saw ‘I Am Number Four‘ at the cinema last night. (Not bad, would have made a better TV series a lá ‘Dark Angel; wait for DVD if you can’t sit still, it’s a bit slow in places) The photographer girl had an art journal and it was pretty cool up on the large screen in HD. Not sure fuzzy screencaps really do it justice, but we’ll try. (Click to view larger sizes)

'I Am No 4' - art journal screencapture *no copyright infringement intended*

Loving the dirty, grundy ink splattered look. The sepia and black is really interesting.

Great use of self portraits and tabbed pages. When he was turning the pages in the movie, they were heavy and stiff as if they were stuck with gel medium and they crackled when they moved.

Very simple, but effective use of markers, maps & photos to show personal desires and fears.

'I Am No 4' - art journal screencapture *no copyright infringement intended*

Hard to tell from this shot but the journal itself looked to be around 8×10″ and was full to bursting, with torn edges, tabs, papers and more sticking out from the sides.

Unfortunately I won’t be there for the big announcement. I’ll be Holland. Important papers to sign with the bigwigs don’tcha know

I’m now officially on holiday for a week. Catsitter is organised, travel arrangements are made, just have to pick up my Euros from the post office and do some packing.

I’ll try posting pictures and maybe some video while I’m away. Might even get a blog post or two in. Depends on the wi-fi service.

Have fun kids
